Gherkin Seeds FAQs

When to plant Gherkin Seeds

Gherkin seeds should be sown indoors from April to May or directly outdoors from late May to June once the risk of frost has passed. For an early start, sow seeds indoors in small pots and transplant them outside when the weather warms up. Gherkins thrive in warm conditions, so ensure the soil temperature is at least 15°C before planting outdoors.

How to Plant Gherkin Seeds

Sow gherkin seeds 1-2 cm deep in seed trays or small pots filled with multi-purpose compost. Keep them in a warm, bright location at around 18-21°C. Once seedlings develop a few leaves and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them outdoors into well-drained, fertile soil in a sunny spot. Space plants about 30-45 cm apart, and provide support with trellises or canes if growing vertically. Water regularly, especially in dry weather.

How long do Gherkin Seeds take to grow?

Gherkin seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days. The plants start producing fruit in around 8-10 weeks, with regular harvesting extending the cropping period. Pick gherkins when they are small (5-8 cm long) for the best texture and flavour.

Why should I plant Gherkin Seeds?

Gherkins are a great addition to any home garden, producing crisp, tangy cucumbers perfect for pickling, salads, and fresh snacking. They are easy to grow, highly productive, and can be cultivated in garden beds, raised beds, or large containers. Growing your own gherkins allows you to enjoy fresher, tastier produce without additives or preservatives.

Where can I plant Gherkin Seeds?

Gherkins thrive in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny and sheltered location. They grow well in open ground, raised beds, or large pots on a patio. If space is limited, train them to climb up trellises or supports. A greenhouse or polytunnel can also extend the growing season and improve yields.
